Glossary
Aloe Extract
This is an oil soluble extract from the Aloe Vera plant, which is "internationally" known for its ability to soothe dry skin and to help heal minor burns.
Broad Spectrum
Broad spectrum sunscreen helps protect skin from both UVA and UVB radiation.
Hypoallergenic
Less likely to cause allergic reactions or rashes.
Mineral Oil
Is a derivative of Petroleum oil, considered one of the best hydrating natural ingredients.
Non-Comedogenic
Designed to prevent clogging of the pores and therefore does not cause pimples.
Oil Free
The formula contains no oils.
PABA Free
Indicates that the ingredient PABA has not been used in the product. Years ago, PABA was the common sunscreen ingredient. PABA caused allergic reactions in some individuals. It has since been replaced with Padimate O, a safe derivative. Neither of which are present in Banana Boat® products sold in Australia.
Photo Sensitivity
Increased sensitivity to sun exposure following exposure to certain drugs or chemicals.
SPF
Stands for Sun Protection Factor and is a rating which helps determine for how long people with different skin types can stay in the sun without getting sunburned.
Sunless
A formula that allows you to safely develop a tanned appearance without exposure to sun rays. Our current Banana Boat® Sunless Tanning products do not provide protection against sunburn.
Sunscreen
Term used to denote products providing sun protection. Most sunscreens work by containing either an organic chemical compound that absorbs ultraviolet light (such as oxybenzone) or an opaque material that reflects light (such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide), or a combination of both. Typically, absorptive materials are referred to as chemical blocks, whereas opaque materials are mineral or physical blocks.
Sweat Resistant
Lotion that dries quickly to a non-sticky finish and will continue to provide protection even when you perspire.
UVA Rays
Ageing rays that penetrate deeply into the skin and may cause long-term skin damage, i.e. wrinkling, ageing, and skin cancer.
UVB Rays
Burning rays that are higher in energy than UVA rays and can cause sunburn and skin cancer.
UVC Rays
Rays that are filtered by the ozone and never reach the earth.
Water Resistant
Sunscreens that do not wash off for up to 80 minutes in water. Therefore, they will continue to provide the same sun protection in or out of water.
